Build a dashboard that answers business questions

Useful reporting begins with clear definitions, reliable data and an intended decision.

Name the decision

Start with the action a report should support. A sales manager may need to review opportunities without a next action, while a service manager needs to understand unresolved requests. Different questions require different measures.

Define the measure

Agree what a term such as open request, active employee or qualified lead means. Record the date logic, exclusions and owner. Two dashboards with different definitions can look polished while giving conflicting answers.

Check the source

Review completeness, duplicate records and refresh availability. Understand whether data comes from an export, database or supported API. A dashboard cannot repair an undocumented process on its own.

Design for the user

Show the most useful measures first, use readable labels and provide enough context to interpret a change. Keep filters understandable and avoid packing every chart onto one screen. Role-specific views may be more useful than a single large report.

Validate and maintain

Compare report values with a known sample before rollout. Assign an owner for refresh failures, credentials and changed business definitions. Review whether the dashboard continues to support the decision it was designed for.
